
Alien sightings near Roswell, NM, have been reported since the 1940s. Back in the 1950s talk about UFOs in Roswell routinely cropped up in newspaper articles. Recently, I was astonished to see former astronaut, Edgar Mitchell, putting forth his notion that aliens had visited the earth and that they had intervened to stop nuclear war. Writers grab your pens! This could be a great “what if” for a science fiction novel. Readers, listen up! This is how novels begin. Some small article in a newspaper gets the wheels turning. This one sure did for me.

Aliens Are Science Fiction
Now, I’m married to a scientist. I know how science works. A scientist may come up with a hypothesis, but then she or he will test that hypothesis and gather data. The test will be repeated. Then the scientist’s peers will weigh in on whether they believe that researcher has made some error in data analysis. Later on, the original hypothesis may need to be revised. Someone else will come along and refine or throw out the theory, but again, that revision will be based on data.
Do Mitchell’s statements about UFOs and aliens do any harm? Should he be calling his pronouncements science fiction instead of science?
